About This Tour

Lisbon is one of the oldest and most layered cities in Europe — Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Portuguese kings all left their mark here. Most visitors spend days wandering without fully understanding what they're seeing. This tour changes that.

In 7 hours and with a maximum of 8 people, you'll cover the essential Lisbon — properly. We begin in Alfama, the ancient Moorish neighbourhood that survived the 1755 earthquake, where the narrow alleyways, miradouros (viewpoints), and Fado houses tell a story the rest of the city has lost. Your guide explains how to read the city's layers — the Moorish street plan, the Pombaline grid, the Manueline ornaments. Then to Belém, where the Age of Discovery begins: Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, and the original Pastéis de Belém bakery (open since 1837). Then through the Chiado — Lisbon's literary and cultural heart, with its 19th-century bookshop and art nouveau cafés. And finally to LX Factory, the converted industrial complex that's become the city's creative hub.

Maximum 8 guests. Real guide. Real stories. Your ECO travelling friend in Lusitan lands.

Tour Itinerary

09:30 — Start
Meet — Central Lisbon
We meet in the Marquês de Pombal area. Exact coordinates sent via WhatsApp after booking. Board the 8-seat minivan for a short drive to Alfama.
~10:00 — Stop 1
Alfama — Moorish Lisbon (1h 30min)
Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon and the only neighbourhood that survived the 1755 earthquake virtually intact. Its maze of steep alleyways, tiled houses, and neighbourhood squares belong to a different Lisbon — the Moorish city that existed before the Portuguese arrived in 1147. Your guide leads you through the best alleys, up to the Portas do Sol and São Jorge Castle viewpoints for panoramic views over the Tagus, and explains how to read the Moorish, medieval, and modern layers of the city. You'll hear about Fado — the melancholic music born in these streets that is now UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
~11:45 — Stop 2
Chiado & Bairro Alto (30min)
A short drive to Chiado — Lisbon's literary and cultural heart, rebuilt after an 1988 fire by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Walk past the Livraria Bertrand (the oldest operating bookshop in the world, open since 1732), the art nouveau Brasileira café where Fernando Pessoa once held court, and the elegant squares that make Chiado the city's most refined neighbourhood.
~12:30 — Stop 3
Belém — Tower, Monastery & Pastéis (1h 30min)
Drive west along the Tagus to Belém — where Vasco da Gama set sail for India in 1497. Guided visit to the Belém Tower exterior — the Gothic-Manueline watchtower that defended Lisbon's harbour and became the symbol of the Age of Discovery. Then the Jerónimos Monastery — commissioned by King Manuel I to celebrate the discovery of the sea route to India, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the finest example of Manueline architecture in the world. Interior entry optional (approx €10). Then the unmissable finale: a warm pastel de nata at Pastéis de Belém, the original bakery operating with the same secret recipe since 1837. Included in your tour price.
~14:15 — Stop 4
LX Factory & Lunch (1 hour)
Drive to LX Factory — a converted 19th-century industrial complex under the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge, now home to studios, restaurants, bookshops, and markets. Free time for lunch here (own cost) — there are excellent options at all price points, and on Sundays a popular market fills the courtyard. Your guide will recommend what's good.
~16:30 — End
Drop-off — Central Lisbon
Return to the meeting point in central Lisbon. The city is now yours — and you'll know how to read it.

What Travellers Say

★★★★★

"The perfect first day in Lisbon. Our guide explained the city in a way that made everything make sense — the history, the architecture, why the streets go in that direction, why Fado sounds the way it does. After this tour, the rest of our trip in Lisbon was so much richer. And the pastéis at the original bakery were incredible."

★★★★★

"We've been to Lisbon twice before and thought we knew the city. This tour showed us how wrong we were. Dyego took us down alleys I'd never have found on my own and explained things I'd never understood despite reading guidebooks. The Alfama section alone was worth the entire price."

★★★★★

"We did this as our first tour in Lisbon and it set the tone for the whole trip. The guide was warm, funny, and deeply knowledgeable. The small group meant we could ask questions and really talk. LX Factory was a lovely surprise at the end. Would not visit Lisbon without doing this first."

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this Lisbon city tour cover?
The tour covers Alfama (Lisbon's ancient Moorish neighbourhood and birthplace of Fado), miradouro viewpoints over the Tagus, the Chiado literary district, Belém Tower exterior, Jerónimos Monastery exterior, a Pastel de Nata tasting at the original Pastéis de Belém bakery (open since 1837), and LX Factory. All transport, guide, and pastry tasting are included.
Is this tour done walking or by minivan?
Both. We use the 8-seat minivan to travel efficiently between neighbourhoods — Alfama, Belém, Chiado, LX Factory. Within each area we explore on foot with the guide. Lisbon is very hilly and the minivan means you arrive fresh at each stop rather than exhausted from walking between them.
What is the difference between Pastel de Nata and Pastel de Belém?
A pastel de nata is the generic Portuguese custard tart found across the country. A Pastel de Belém is specifically made at the original Pastéis de Belém bakery in Belém, using a secret recipe unchanged since 1837. The Belém version uses a distinct pastry shell and a different custard formulation — slightly more caramelised on top and creamier inside — and is considered the definitive version by most Portuguese. We take you to the original bakery.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes — every tour is available as a fully private experience for your group, whether it's a couple, a family, or a corporate group. Message us on WhatsApp to discuss dates and private pricing.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time. We're flexible in genuine circumstances — just message us on WhatsApp and we'll sort it out. No forms, no fuss.
