About This Tour

Three places that could not be more different — and yet together they make perfect sense as a portrait of Portugal. Fátima, the pilgrimage site that changed a nation. Nazaré, the fishing village on a clifftop above the most powerful waves in the world. And Pena Palace, the fairy-tale palace that defies every expectation.

In Fátima, your guide explains the story of the 1917 apparitions and the extraordinary Sanctuary that grew from them — one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, visited by over four million people each year. Whether you're religious or not, the scale and atmosphere are unlike anything else in Portugal. Then north to Nazaré's clifftop at Sítio — where the dramatic Atlantic panorama spreads out beneath you, and where in winter, surfers ride waves that break world records. Then south to Sintra for Pena Palace, the most photographed palace in Portugal, built by an eccentric king who loved colour, symbolism, and spectacle.

Maximum 8 guests. Real guide. Real stories. Your ECO travelling friend in Lusitan lands.

Tour Itinerary

08:00 — Departure
Pickup — Central Lisbon
Early start from the Marquês de Pombal area in our 8-seat air-conditioned minivan. Exact coordinates are sent via WhatsApp after booking. Coffee stop en route is possible.
~09:30 — Stop 1
Fátima Sanctuary (1h 30min guided)
Visit the Sanctuary of Fátima — the site of the alleged 1917 apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children, which became one of the most significant Marian shrines in Catholicism. Your guide explains the full story: the children, the apparitions, the investigations, and how Fátima became a place visited by over 4 million pilgrims per year. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Chapel of the Apparitions, and the vast esplanade create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Portugal. Entry to the Sanctuary is free.
~11:30 — Stop 2
Nazaré — Sítio Clifftop Viewpoint (1 hour)
A short drive north to the dramatic clifftop of Sítio da Nazaré — where the village sits 110 metres above the ocean on a sheer promontory. The sweeping panorama over the beach, the town, and the Atlantic is extraordinary. This is also where, between October and March, surfers ride waves that regularly exceed 20 metres and have broken world records. Your guide explains the science behind the underwater canyon that creates them. Free time to explore the clifftop, browse local stalls, and take in the view.
~12:45 — Stop 3
Lunch Break — Nazaré Town (45min)
Free time in Nazaré town for lunch (own cost). The seafront promenade has excellent grilled fish restaurants at reasonable prices — your guide will point you in the right direction.
~14:30 — Stop 4
Pena Palace — Sintra (1h 30min)
Skip-the-line entry to the exterior and gardens of Pena Palace in Sintra. The most colourful, theatrical palace in Portugal — built in the 1840s by King Ferdinand II who wanted to express Romanticism in architecture. Your guide covers the history, the symbolism, and the views over the Serra de Sintra and out to the Atlantic. Optional interior entry available on the day (approx €14).
~16:30 — Return
Return to Lisbon (arrive ~17:30)
Return drive to central Lisbon. Drop-off at the original departure point or a nearby central location.

"Incredible day. We visited in November and saw some of the famous Nazaré waves from the clifftop — absolutely spectacular. The group was just 6 people and we had real conversations with the guide. Fátima was something I didn't expect to find so fascinating. Highly recommend."

"As a Catholic, visiting Fátima was very important to me and I'm so glad I did it with a guide who could explain everything properly. Nazaré surprised me with how beautiful the cliffs were. Pena Palace at the end was magical. The small group made everything so much more personal."

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be religious to enjoy the Fátima stop?
Not at all. Fátima is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world — but it's also a fascinating place from a historical, cultural, and architectural perspective. Your guide explains the 1917 apparitions story, the shrine's development, and its significance for Portugal. Many non-religious guests say it's one of the most moving stops of the day.
Can we see the giant waves at Nazaré?
Nazaré's famous giant waves (which can exceed 30 metres) are a seasonal phenomenon driven by a deep underwater canyon. They typically occur between October and March. In summer the sea is calmer — but the clifftop at Sítio da Nazaré is spectacular in every season, with panoramic views over the long beach and the Atlantic horizon.
Does this tour include Pena Palace interior entry?
The price includes skip-the-line entry to the exterior and gardens of Pena Palace. The interior is optional at approximately €14 extra, payable on the day. Given how full the day is, most guests are satisfied with the exterior and gardens.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes — every tour is available as a fully private experience for your group, whether it's a couple, a family, or a larger group. Message us on WhatsApp to discuss dates and private pricing.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time. We're flexible in genuine circumstances — just message us on WhatsApp and we'll sort it out. No forms, no fuss.
